Shared parenting is an arrangement that some parents rely on for child custody because it provides the children with the consistency that can help them thrive. Even though this is a choice, some parents find that it is one that is hard to live with. There are many ways that you can make shared parenting a little easier, so you have to try to find the solutions that work for your case.

One of the things that you might consider when you are using shared parenting is going through counseling. This might seem like a shot in the dark to some people, but it actually gives you a chance to discuss issues with an impartial third party who can help you work through the issues, as well as any underlying situations that might be making the arrangement more difficult.

Another option is to set regular appointments with your ex to discuss anything that needs to be addressed. This might be upcoming events that the child has coming up or discussing school or health matters.

Making sure that you and your ex are being respectful toward each other can go a long way in these situations. You also need to be willing to negotiate so that you are able to work through decisions that aren’t clear cut.

Above all, don’t forget to put your children first. Focusing on the failed marriage as you make these decisions can make it hard to keep your mind focused. If your children are old enough, find out what opinion they have on the matter. From there, you can decide how to address the situation.
