Child support payments are meant to support a child, or that is what you would think when you hear the term. This isn’t the case in all instances. One woman’s story is providing an interesting look into what might actually go on with child support payments.
The background of the case is that the woman and her ex share their children. The three children stay with her four days per week and with him three days per week. She has a job and he doesn’t work because he claims that he has an injury.
On July 26, the woman was ordered to pay $475 in child support, which was a slight decrease from the formulaic amount of $500 that she should have paid. This isn’t the issue, though.
The issue in this woman’s case is that only $50 per month is going to her ex for the children. But, where is the rest of the money going. The remaining $425 per month of the child support this woman is paying goes to the state to repay some of the benefits that her unemployed ex has received from the state.
Since courts are supposed to put the children first, it seems like the child support payments would go toward them. Instead, the money is going to the state to support her ex.
