A couple of decades ago, the vast majority of child custody cases were handled the same way. The mother was given custody of the children and the father had them every other weekend and a couple of weeks during the summer. This has changed, and for the betterment of the children.

Children who are in the middle of a child custody case can usually count on having a lot of involvement from both parents. In some cases, the parents co-parent to help the child have a life that involves both parents in the major events of life. We understand that this might be a bit of a challenge.

Co-parenting isn’t always easy for the parents, but some parents opt to put themselves on the back burner and focus on the children. If you are planning on a situation that involves co-parenting, you and your ex need to set clear expectations right now for the days, months and years ahead.

Even if you aren’t going to co-parent, you might still need to utilize some of the concepts of co-parenting. For example, you might need to ensure that both parents are present for major events in the child’s life, such as graduations, school plays and sporting events. If this is the case, make sure that you clearly lay out what type of behavior is suitable for the parents, as well as for family members who might be participating.

Ultimately, you must think about your child’s needs and desires when you are working out a child custody plan. We can help you work through the issues so that you can set your child up for a nice childhood.
