Leaving a controlling spouse isn't always easy

Going through a divorce isn't on the top of anyone's list of fun things to do, but for some people, it is the only way to get free from a controlling partner. When you are going through a divorce from someone who is controlling, you might not be sure how to handle things on your own. Being held down by your partner for a long time is a difficult hurdle to overcome.

We understand that divorces come in all shapes and sizes. When you are in the midst of one, you should make sure that you are taking steps to protect your own interests. If you have finally taken the steps to regain your freedom and sense of identity, you need to be prepared to fight for what you need and want.

Throughout your marriage, you likely counted on your spouse to take care of you. Even if you didn't realize you were doing that, you might realize it now. Sometimes, a controlling spouse takes away your ability to do anything for yourself. This is troubling because it puts you at a disadvantage when you are starting over because you might feel overwhelmed with having to make normal decisions.

As you are working on the settlement for the divorce, you can finally put yourself first. You don't have to think about what will please your spouse or what will make him or her upset. Instead, you can think about how each outcome of the divorce will impact your future. Now is your time to think about yourself and put yourself first.
