Some people say that the end of their marriage is something that comes as a shock. Those people might be surprised to find out that there were actually signs that this was coming. The communication in a relationship is often a clue about how things are going. When there is silence or a lack of communication, those are signs that the marriage is failing.

Another issue with communication is when there is high conflict in the marriage. This is something that can be as damaging as having a complete lack of communication. A high conflict marriage might entail one partner constantly attacking the other one over what he or she does. It can include gas lighting and other communication issues that can be considered domestic violence.

A healthy marriage is one in which communication is an open two-way street. One important marker that couples should look at when they are trying to determine how healthy their marriage is based on their communication is how they are able to discuss their feelings. Being able to freely discuss how you feel is a sign that your relationship is likely healthy. Not being able to do this is a sign that there is work that needs to be done.
