Powerful emotions often accompany a divorce

The end of a marriage is a big step for anyone. When you decide that you are going to get divorced, you might automatically start to think about things like property division and child custody that come with the split. There is another aspect that you also need to consider — how you will handle the emotional toll that divorce takes on you.

You are likely going to feel very strong emotions, which might come in waves. You might be happy one day and upset the next. You may feel anger, rage, disbelief, excitement, relief, adventurous, liberated or shamed. All of these are normal during the divorce process and also for some time after it is finalized.

Even though these emotions are powerful, you can't let them dictate your decisions. During a divorce, it's not really a good time to make additional major life changes. You need to focus on the practical aspects of your split. It might take some effort to reach the point where you can do this, but you will likely find it very helpful.

Keeping a close eye on how your choices will impact your finances can provide some stability for you. Now isn't the time to quit your job or make a major move. Instead, wait until the divorce is over and things settle down to see if you still think those huge changes are best.

Throughout the divorce and the year of firsts, make sure that you are taking care of yourself. You are much more likely to make decisions in your best interests if you are in good health, well-rested and clear minded.
